More about Denmark
In the Middle Ages, seafaring Vikings from this country ravaged and conquered many parts of Europe, but today Denmark has emerged as a hallmark of civilisation with its progressive and friendly people committed to a liberal social system that focuses on liberty, welfare and free speech. This is a country that will impress the visitor as much with its magnificent history as its unique modern culture.
Denmark is located between the Baltic and the North Seas. Jutland in the north is the main island peninsula, with hundreds of smaller islands sprinkled around it. About a hundred of them are inhabited and connected to the mainland by bridges and ferries. The other three major islands are Sjalland, Fyn and Lolland. A largely flat country, Denmark has a mix of panoramic villages and towns, and three major cities–Alborg, Arhus and Odense–apart from capital city, Copenhagen.
Copenhagen captivates with its medieval cobbled streets, quaint buildings, and old-world aura, coupled with the most modern of edifices and ambience. A visitor must not stop with the capital city. Because there is a lot more to explore–in Denmark’s prim countryside and pristine beaches, inviting islands and awe-inspiring bridges, beech forests and biking tracks. The landscape is dotted with stretching rows of white wind turbines glistening in the sun.
Wherever you go across Denmark, the serene settings and amiable people will make you wonder at the fearsome history of the marauding Vikings who once terrorised most of Europe. Today, this country is loved for its calm and peaceful environment, as also for the egalitarian and enlightened ethos of the people. All said and done, you will always be left with an unmistakable sense of welcome while in Denmark.
Denmark’s penchant for high quality standards and world class designs is well known the world over and amply evident in every aspect of their life and living, be it buildings and bridges or transport and accommodation, art and architecture or hospitality and cuisine. Unmatched dairy products and delicious pastries are Danish specialties that you will relish, not to speak of a rich variety of food and drinks.
Much of the quintessential Denmark is found mainly in three large areas: North Jutland, Mid-Jutland and South Jutland, each with its trademark culture and traditions.
North Jutland is a virtual paradise for visitors and families who can enjoy with abandon the sun, sands, and the sea all day along. Those fond of unwinding by the waters can venture out on a bout of swimming or windsurfing, fishing or sailing. And there’s a lot on offer on land–a stroll by the Himmerland Nature Park; trips to a fishing village or market town; visits to antique castles, forts or cathedrals; a hand at golf on an exotic course; and many more. If you are on the lookout for entertainment, especially for children, head for the Sommerland Activity Park, the Tivoliland Amusement Park, or the Farup Aqua Park. Don’t miss out the great cuisine and shopping spree at Alborg, the biggest town in North Jutland.
The famously known LEGOLAND, an amazing replica of the world made of over 42 million Lego bricks, alone would suffice to announce the treasures that a tourist might find in Mid-Jutland. Glistening beaches and sprawling moorlands, castles and churches, town markets and entertainment parks attract the young and the old to this fascinating region. Arhus, the second largest city in Denmark offers eateries, music and entertainment venues as well as shopping malls. And then there’s the mysterious mini-town of Varde and the 600-years old Ringkobing town to do your shopping. Kids can get entertainment to their heart’s delight at the parks–Aqua Akvarium Theme Parks in Silkeborg, Djurs Sommerland, Givskud Safari Park, and Sommerland West.
South Jutland has some of Denmark’s best monuments, churches and other ancient relics. Kolding, the royal city, is fascinating with its beautiful gardens and historical castles. One can explore the long sandy beaches and inlets, or visit Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark with a hoary history related to the famed Vikings. The Romo Sommerland Aquapark offers a variety of entertainment activities and is a great hit especially with children.
