France A founding member of the European Union, France is among the largest of countries in Europe with a total area of 550,000 sq km and a population of 61 million. Paris, the capital city, is one of the leading commercial, cultural and art centres in the world. France is a Republic with the president as head of state and the prime minister responsible for administration. The French parliament has a National Assembly with members elected once in five years, as well as a Senate consisting of members chosen through an electoral college. France has an ideal mix of agricultural and industrial economy, both of which are highly advanced and productive. These include Pascal and Descartes (17th century); Rousseau and Voltaire (18th century); Flaubert and Baudelaire (19th century); and Camus and Sartre (20th century).
