Fools take a chance on insurance
Ever been taken ill on holiday, fallen over and broken your leg or got knocked over by a car abroad?
No, probably not. Luckily, it doesn’t happen to many people and that’s why an astonishing number, over 10 per cent, still travel without insurance.
They think it will never happen to them. It’s the stupidest thing you can do.
Not only is the cost of medical care particularly high in many resorts, but now word is leaking out that people are being overcharged in many parts of the world.
Medical costs are as much as double or triple what they should be in countries such as Bulgaria, The Dominican Republic, Greece and Spain, according insurance firm Europ Assistance.
So-called tourist clinics are reliant on having a full quota of clients and are often guilty of taking x-rays and blood tests, and keeping people in bed overnight, for even minor scrapes, aches and pains.
If you haven’t got insurance, then guess who’ll have to pay.
I’ve heard people say travel insurance is a waste of money if you come back unscathed, because you didn’t actually need it. Wrong. What you buy is peace of mind.
