Grand Palais re-opens after 12 year facelift
There’s now another reason to visit Paris – the Grand Palais, one of the architectural jewels of the historic city, has re-opened.
For the past 12 years the turn-of-the-century building has undergone a complete facelift at a staggering cost of around £70 million. Even the dome’s edge and the copper statues of rearing horses have been given a touch up.
With its giant glass cupola that stands out over the Paris skyline, the Grand Palais is one of the city’s most visible landmarks and is located between the Champs-Elysees and the River Seine.
The building has now reassumed its original function as a cultural centre and will host varied events such as music festivals, art exhibitions and fashion shows. Fashion labels such as Chanel and Christian Dior have booked the Grand Palais for their spring 2006 shows.
The scaffolding outside the Grand Palais – which in all honesty is a bit of an eyesore – won’t be coming down for a while, though. Exterior renovations are due to continue until 2007.
