Lessons from Costa Rica
From Costa Rica comes the heart-warming tale of an elderly cruise passenger who fought off a mugger.
He was disembarking from a ship in Limon with other passengers when they were held up at gunpoint. But the muggers picked on the wrong man when they singled out a retired US marine and martial arts expert; the 70-year-old killed one of them with his bare hands. The police accepted he was acting in self-defence and did not charge him.
Of course it would never happen over here. The mugger’s family would be in for a hefty compensation payment, along with the other muggers, who would argue that their human rights had been breached by having to witness the act of self-defence.
It comes to something when you wish our legal system was like the one operated in Costa Rica.
