Look out for new Euro rules on driving
Holidaymakers heading for the French motorways were warned in the last newsletter to drive sensibly as the police were issuing hefty fines for those caught speeding.
Austria has joined Italy and Spain in demanding that all car drivers carry reflective jackets, to be worn in case of a breakdown. I have to say that I have already driven in Austria this summer, was not aware of this rule and did not carry any luminous jackets! But luckily, I didn’t break down or get stopped by the police. Ignorance of this rule is no defence, you have been warned.
Elsewhere, lots of silly little regulations are being put in place. In Greece, you are required to carry a fire extinguisher in your car while Spain and the Czech Republic require drivers to carry spare headlight bulbs.
As a cynic, I’m inclined to think that half these rules are just designed to catch out tourists and squeeze money from them. If you plan to drive abroad this summer, make sure you check the rules of the countries you are visiting.
