Mossies not frightened by buzzers

Do you buy mosquito repellents to make sure you don’t get any nasty bites while you’re away on holiday?

If so, you could be wasting your money, according to a hard hitting report from Consumers’ Association publication Holiday Which?

The survey said that the effectiveness of repellents varied enormously, with some offering no protection and others virtually 100 per cent reliable.

Don’t stock up on buzzers, as they’re the least effective. Holiday Which? tested four of them, which use a high or low frequency sound meant to deter mosquitoes, and found none worked on the anopheles mosquito that feeds off humans.

The plug-in vapour devices were the best bet, the survey said. It tested Boots Repel, Jungle Formula, Lifestyles and Mosqui-Go Duo. All of them killed every mosquito within five minutes.

The last word must go to Lorna Cowen, editor of Holiday Which?, who said: “People are at their most vulnerable when they’re asleep, so plug-ins are a worthwhile investment, although in malaria areas people should use impregnated bed nets. The buzzers we tried were a shocking waste of money.”
