Phone Hell in the Sky

When I first started working, you could tell the boss that you had a crucial job to do which would take all afternoon, then complete the task in double quick time and retire to the pub, safe in the knowledge that no-one would be able to track you down.

Of course, mobile phones changed all that. We’ve all got them and use them several times daily.

But the downside is that employees can be accountable for their every move and, unless they are stuck underground on the Tube, are always contactable.

That’s why I love flying – the longer the trip, the better. You can settle into that seat and spend hours watching films and reading, eating and drinking, knowing that nobody can hassle you about some forthcoming meeting or report that you should have completed the previous week.

Unfortunately, all that is also about to change.

Air France will soon start allowing mobile phones to be used on board and when one airline starts, the others will follow.

I know that you can already use those special telephones in the seat backs of some aircraft, but it’s a different matter when people can actually dial your number and get through.

Not only will your phone ring just as your nodding off to sleep, but what’s the betting you’ll be sat next to some annoying geek conducting share dealings all the way across the Atlantic?

Is that progress?

How would you feel sitting next to someone on his or her mobile for hours? I advise taking your own headphones on board.
