History There is evidence of human occupation on the Isle of Man since the end of the Ice Age over 10,000 years ago. The Isle of Man has been subject to incursions from a variety of raiders and settlers over its history. After being settled by migrants from Ireland in the first millennium, the Isle of Man was exposed to Christianity for the first time, which must have proved a spiritual bulwark against the subsequent raids by Vikings from Norway. After becoming subject to Norwegian rule, when it formed part of the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles, the Isle of Man later became a possession of the Scottish and then the English Crowns. Since 1866, the Isle of Man as a Crown dependency has moved towards democratic self-government. What to See and Do in Douglas
