Ferries from Fleetwood
Fleetwood
Fleetwood is well established as one of the major ports for travel in the UK to and from Northern Ireland, and has been a major fishing port for 90 years. It is Located in North West Lancashire, at the mouth of the River Wyre, on the southern shore of Morecambe Bay, the second largest bay in the United Kingdom. The town was founded in the early 1830s by Sir Peter Hesketh, and designed in part by the Victorian architect, Decimus Burton. Fleetwood prides itself on "Hospitality & Service". As a popular seaside holiday resort it originally catered for Victorian gentlefolk. The old part of Fleetwood is centred on the Mount, the last in a line of sand hills, with the streets radiating outwards in the fashion of a spider’s web. Fleetwood is notable for its one-time great fishing and seafood industry, but this has declined in recent years, although visitors can visit the jetties where Fleetwood trawlers still offload their catch, or charter one of the many local boats to try some sea angling. The town has experienced many ups and downs throughout its history, and especially devastating was the loss of most of its fishing fleet following the Icelandic Cod Wars in the 1970s, and the cutbacks in fishing quotas during the 1980s and 1990s.
