Folkestone

Folkestone Folkestone is a resort town on the south coast of Kent, England, traditionally known as "The Garden Coast". Situated at the foot of the North Downs, the town has stunning views of the surrounding countryside as well as the coast of France. Folkestone came of age during the Edwardian era, as people flocked to the coast in search of a "sound body and virtuous mind". Their legacy lives on, in the wide leafy avenues and beautiful cinnamon brick buildings that border almost every street, and the cobbled Old High Street which leads down to the fishing harbour. A hundred years ago the town was a Royal holiday destination and nowadays the Channel Tunnel connects Folkestone to mainland Europe. History Until the railway acquired the port in 1842 for the sum of £18,000, the town had little significance except as a smuggling centre, which flourished about 1800. Just to the north is an ancient fortification called Caesar’s Camp. On the Leas, a shrub and floral coastal walk, is a statue of William Harvey, the great anatomist who discovered the circulation of blood, born in Folkestone in 1578. What to See & Do in Folkestone
