Ferries to Gothenburg
Gothenburg Gothenburg is situated on the West Coast of Sweden, and is the second largest city in the country. Gothenburg was named after the Geats, the inhabitants of southern Sweden. The city sits on the Göta River, and Göta Borg is the fortress on the river built to protect the port. Gothenburg is sometimes referred to as "The front side of Sweden" in order to tease Stockholmers and others call it "Little London". But whatever you want to call Gothenburg, the "Jolly West Coast" has something for everyone. History Gothenburg, or Göteborg, was founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf to secure access to the Atlantic, but the city was settled and planned by Dutch merchants, who used it as their base for trade. The numerous canals and gabled houses bear witness to this early influence. Shipping and commerce have always been important industries in Gothenburg. What to See & Do in Gothenburg
