What to See & Do in Hook of Holland
Sights Hook of Holland offers everything for an enjoyable day out, a short break, or a holiday. It has miles of beaches, perfect for cycling or walking along. Bicycles can be hired, or bring your own. Bonnenpolder, at the mouth of the river Meuse, is a quiet and spacious area ideal for cycling, as cars are not permitted. A Scooter Safari, with special scooters for adults and children, is a great way for the family to explore the local forest, dunes and beach. A fort built to protect the waterway from attack was erected in 1889, and from its ramparts you can get good views of the surrounding countryside. The storm surge barrier protects the Netherlands from the sea. The two parts of the barrier close off the 360-metre wide waterway to prevent flooding. This massive structure is the same size as the Eiffel Tower, but four times heavier. An exhibition with moving scale models, video presentations and animations is a must see. The Coastal Lighting Museum is housed in the 100-year-old lighthouse which stands on the Nieuwe Waterweg. The Jan Knijnenburg Greenhouse Museum, situated in the middle of the polder, houses a unique collection of horticultural tools and equipment. Hinterland If you want to travel further afield, pay a visit to Kinderdijk, where twenty windmills help control the water level, with a guided tour of Windmill number two. Or drop in to The Hague. This is the seat of the Dutch government, residence of the Dutch royal family, and home to the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. Madurodam is a miniature village that incorporates models of the major sights in the Netherlands. Eating Out The Hook of Holland offers visitors a variety of restaurants, beach and outdoor cafés, pubs and discothèques. Rotterdam, on the other side of the canal, has the largest port in Europe and largest in the world until 2004. It also has the busiest nightlife in the area, and you’re sure to find a restaurant, bar or club to suit your tastes. Service in the Netherlands is usually welcoming and friendly. Transport By Car: The E30/E25 network of motorways links the Hook of Holland port with Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Join the motorway and follow the signs to England and Hook van Holland. By Rail: The Amsterdam Express and local rail services arrive directly outside the Hook of Holland terminal building. By Ferry: Route Network and Hook of Holland Ferry Port Operators: Stena Line runs the service from Hook of Holland to Harwich. Simply follow the signs to check-in.
