What to See and Do in Jersey
Sights Maritime Museum – Situated in the historic harbour area of St Helier, the Maritime Museum focuses on Jersey’s maritime heritage. At the Maritime Museum you can see, hear and even smell the story of Jersey’s maritime past. Also located at the Maritime Museum is the Occupation Tapestry, made by the people of Jersey to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Jersey from German occupation during the Second World War. Mont Orgueil Castle – Overlooking the picturesque harbour at Gorey and the Royal Bay of Grouville, Mont Orgueil Castle is Jersey’s most iconic building. The castle dates to the 13th century and was built to defend Jersey from the French when King John lost control of Normandy to King Philip of France. Life-size wooden soldiers guard the castle from attack and a grisly wooden carving shows the fate that could await those fighting to save the castle from invasion. There are more than fifty exhibits and plenty of activities for kids. Elizabeth Castle – Built on an islet in St Aubin’s Bay, Elizabeth Castle has defended Jersey from the French for more than three hundred years. The castle was built in 1590, and was once the home of Jersey’s Tudor Governor Sir Walter Raleigh. Hamptonne House – There are six centuries of rural life to discover at Hamptonne, which dates back to the 15th century. Life at Hamptonne is all about self-sufficiency. Calfs, pigs, geese and chickens are kept alongside the herb garden and other crops to cater for the needs of the family. Explore Hamptonne house with the help of the resident housekeeper, the Goodwyf, who tends to the house and will intrigue you with local gossip such as the witches’ chimney ledges on the roof, where witches supposedly rested whilst out on their broomsticks. Food & drink Good food has been one of Jersey’s attractions for many years and the Island has built up an international reputation for its range of restaurants and cooking styles, which continues to impress visitors and locals alike.
