Newcastle Welcome to Geordie Land a passionate city in the North East of England particularly with its Football and sport in general. Newcastle originated as a bridgehead of the Roman Empire. Pons Aelius and was the earliest known crossing of the river and the origin of Newcastle as a settlement. Norman control in the 11th century saw the establishment of Newcastle’s contemporary urban landscape and the construction of the royal castle high above the river Tyne. By the 17th century, Newcastle was considered a regional capital and the second town of the Kingdom. During the following two centuries Newcastle continued to expand beyond its walls and new Georgian streets were added to the mediaeval backdrop. The city and its river fuelled the industrial revolution in the region. Between the wars, the wholesale collapse of the area’s industrial base left a legacy with which the city and region was forced to struggle for decades, but in recent years a series of initiatives has seen the transformation of Newcastle into a vibrant, modern cultural and economic magnet.
