What to See and Do in Southampton
Sights Southampton Maritime Museum- Housed in the Wool House, an ancient 15th century building, this museum features displays that chronicle the history of the port of Southampton and the history of the RMS Titanic and the White Star Line, told by the survivors and residents of Southampton. Bar Gate- One of Southampton’s most distinctive landmarks, Bar Gate was once a heavily defended tollgate. Its construction began in the 12th century and was finally completed in the 15th century. Symbol of civic power, the Bar Gate comprises a statue of George III on the reverse side, a watch bell on the south side and 18th century shields and lions, 13th century half-round drum towers and arrow slits towards the north side. Broadlands House- Ideally located on the River Test, Broadlands House is a magnificent stately home. It contains a rich collection of paintings, notable furniture, Wedgwood China and family portraits. Tudor House Museum-Built in 1495, Tudor House Museum was reconstructed in the 16th century. Having been home to many businesses and artists’ studios, Tudor House Museum contains a minstrel’s gallery, creaky floorboards, old kitchens and one of Henry VIII’s cannons. Titanic Engineers’ Memorial- Titanic Engineers’ Memorial is a haunting tribute to those men who helped in building and shaping the ill-fated ship Titanic that famously sank on its maiden voyage. The memorial consists of a large stone pedestal with benches, crowned by a bronze angel with wings outstretched and workers below her. It is a top tourist attraction. Food & Drink For dining out there are numerous choices. There is a wide range of the best in international cuisine on offer, with American-style diners, Greek tavernas, Thai restaurants and some exceptional Italian and Indian eateries. There are plenty of places to grab quick snacks if you’re in a hurry. Close to the marinas is the historic Oxford Street where you’ll find elegant cafe bars and restaurants serving the very best of contemporary British and Continental cuisine.
