Stay in a drain in Austria

Memories of travelling around Europe on an Interrail ticket and sleeping in train stations as a teenager came flooding back when I heard of the latest accommodation on offer by Andreas Strauss, an Austrian art college graduate.

Ingenious Andreas has got sections of giant concrete drainage pipes, put them in a park near the Danube and called it accommodation.

To be fair it is a step up (just) from sleeping in a station. The drains have tiny circular windows in the ceilings. A power point, blankets, linen and sleeping bags are provided.

Even better, you don’t really have to pay much for the privilege of staying in a pipe. Guests are invited to leave an amount of money in Euros that they feel happy to spend for their night’s sleep.

There is one drawback, though, and it is a massive one if you are planning a night on the beer. There are no bathrooms.

However, the first three prototype rooms are situated close to public washing facilities as well as cafes and bars. Expect lots of people to be buying the cheapest coffee available to allow them to use the facilities.
