Still living at home?

From the post bag… Edwards strongly disagrees with my labelling of students as spoilt because they no longer want to ‘rough it’ in hostels.

He points out that average living standards have risen and, therefore, asks why students should accept poor quality accommodation.

As I said to Edward in my response, I think he has a point. But I’m not asking students to live in a Victorian poorhouse. All I’m saying is that you shouldn’t expect luxury before you’ve earned it.

The refusal to accept anything other than a comfortable life extends beyond students. I speak to a lot of young people (mid to late 20s), who have perfectly good jobs and yet still live at home with their parents. What is all that about?!

They say they can’t afford to buy a place and claim renting is putting money down the drain. But renting with friends teaches you about life and how to look after yourself – I did it for ten years before buying my first flat.

People who still live at home are like drug addicts who claim they can quit at any time. They say things like ‘I’m hardly ever there’ and ‘I only use it as a base’. C’mon, your mummy still washes your socks and makes your tea.
