Superjumbo has beds – but what about the seatbelts?

The new so-called ‘superjumbo’, the A380, is the first commercial aircraft to offer a double bed in the sky. But will romantic couples be forced to wear a seat belt during their trysts?

The A380 is the largest passenger aircraft ever built. Singapore Airlines is the launch customer and will shortly use them on the Sydney to Singapore route.

They have 471 seats, 12 of them suites which, the manufacturer claims, offer a new standard for those who can afford it. Suites are individual cabins with 23 inch flat screen televisions and two of them can be joined together to form one double bed in the sky.

A couple planning to try out the bed will have to fork out around £4,000 for two return tickets between Sydney and Singapore. But already questions are being asked about the practicalities of this new product.

Passengers on aircraft are routinely asked to keep their seat belts on at all times. When an aircraft goes through turbulence, this becomes a mandatory instruction. So, will there be one rule for those in cattle class and another for those in the posh seats, or beds?

Much has been expected of the A380, with wild rumours that it would include a bowling alley, casino and gym. Of course, this turned out to be untrue because they would all take up valuable space where seats would otherwise go.

What’s your view of the bed in the sky?
