Tax and regulation on the horizon

A gloomy forecast of tax and regulation on travel has been made by one of Britain’s leading economists.

Douglas McWilliams, the chief executive of the Centre for Economics and Business Research, said environmental concerns would drive the clampdown over the next decade.

It seems that most of us will be forced to counterbalance the impact of the worst polluters on the planet, who have no intention of changing their behaviour.

The worst offenders are, of course, the US and China. The US has the highest emissions levels and, although it is taking action to reduce its dependence on Middle East oil, it is not very convinced about the need for action on climate change.

China has the fastest growing number of emissions and its five-year plan for the environment focuses on air quality rather than carbon emissions.
Neither country has signed up to the Kyoto Treaty.

Do you think we should be penalised because of the US and China?
