Terror threat leads to airline charges
Budget airlines are increasing charges for checked-in baggage on the back of the terror crisis.
Are they, as they claim, introducing the measure to encourage people to travel light, or simply profiteering?
For bookings made from September 1, easyJet passengers will be allowed to check-in one piece of luggage, but will be charged £5, if paid online, or £10 at the airport, for every extra case they put in the hold.
The weight limit for checked-in baggage will remain at 20kg, regardless of the number of bags checked in and excess charges of £5 per kg will still apply.
EasyJet chief executive Andy Harrison said: “It is simply common sense that people need to think a little more carefully about how much luggage they take and that is what these changes are designed to do. They will speed up check-in and security and make the airport experience better for everyone.”
Ryanair has also announced on its website that it will increase charges from September 1. Currently, every item of baggage is charged at £2.50 if you pre-book and £5 at the airport; these rates will rise to £3.50 and £7 respectively.
