The great school holiday debate
The debate about term-time holidays rages on, particularly as a High Court has just ruled that parents taking children on unauthorised breaks could be prosecuted. Cath, who has taken her daughter out of school for two years in a row to have a family holiday, believes tour operators are in a strong position to force hoteliers to drop their prices in the peak season. I think it would require all the operators to act en masse, which will never happen because the industry is too disparate. Even then, the popular hotels would probably be able to charge a premium direct to clients over the Internet. Sue also says we should follow Scotland’s lead and stagger holidays. That scheme is being trialled by local authorities in England, so we’ll have to wait and see whether it becomes more widespread.
Norma is another teacher literally “boiling with rage”. Teachers do not take inset-training days off, she screams from her email! They come out of teachers’ holidays. Norma then goes into a rant about how children take holidays in term time and then expect teachers to work in their lunch hour to help the pupils get back up to speed. I must say that, having read her point of view, I have a lot more sympathy for teachers. This one will continue to run….
