UK moves a step closer to mobiles on flights

The likelihood that the use of mobile phones on aircraft will be permitted in the UK has increased with new proposals recently announced.

The move will send a shiver down the spine of many customers, who have written in their masses to protest against such a move.

Ofcom has set out its proposals to enable airlines to permit the use of mobiles on UK-registered aircraft. The proposals have been developed with other EU countries and are intended to cover all European airspace.

Under the proposals, use of mobiles, via an aircraft’s network service, will be allowed after an aircraft has reached 3,000 feet. The earliest this could happen is 2008.
