You won’t go hungry on a chateau break
I’ve just come back from a UKferrytickets break.
Yes, I know what you’re thinking – he doesn’t have to pay because he’s a journalist and he writes the company’s blog articles.
Not true. It’s always a good idea to pay your way, because you can then write objectively about a trip.
Four of us paid the normal price of £135 each for a crossing with Eurotunnel and a night in a fabulous chateau in Gosnay, which included an unbelievable amount of food (more of that later). I thought that was pretty good value.
Amazingly, it was my first trip on Eurotunnel, but it won’t be my last. The service was spot on time and very efficient.
Of course, we stocked up on booze at the hypermarkets in France (one of the main reasons for the trip) before heading to Chartreuse du Val St Esprit.
The imposing 19th century chateau is indeed impressive – check out the pictures on their website – but it is the dinner which is staggering. The food was delicious and we had nine courses – I’m not joking. Not only that, the dessert course was actually four puddings in one, served together on a plate. In addition to the dinner and starter, there were appetisers, chocolates, sorbets, cheeses – you name it, it just kept on coming.
We all tried to eat everything, but were flagging by about course seven. The next day we drove over to Le Touquet and had a walk on the beach in a vain attempt to try to work off the calories.
Is the food as good in most of the chateaus in France or were we just lucky? Have you stayed at Chartreuse du Val St Esprit and what did you think of it?
