Youth hostels – fun but lacking privacy

Plenty of people wrote in to tell me about their experiences in youth hostels. Mike says standards are inconsistent and he would stay in more hostels if he and his wife could be sure of having a double room. Once, in Den Hague, his wife had to sleep in a female dormitory with some Italian girls who not only created noise, but also proceeded to entertain their boyfriends!

Gill has fond memories of staying at a Youth Hostel Association property in Clun Mill, with 17 (!) members of her family. They arrived in a blizzard on a Friday evening to find the pipes frozen. However, thanks to the Herculean efforts of the YHA warden, heat was soon restored and the fun, including treasure hunts, sledging and card games, began.

Sylvia says Ambleside youth hostel in the Lake District was, as our American cousins say, awesome. However, the walls between the bedrooms were so thin that she could hear everything, and she means everything, that went on in the room next door.
