Youth won’t slum it in hostels any more
What are your memories of staying in a youth hostel? Was it back in your student days when you’d cram with friends into a basic dormitory and share a communal bathroom?
Well, the Youth Hostel Association is closing around 30 establishments in England and Wales, because they are not making any money.
But the remaining 227 are to receive a massive facelift and will provide small bedrooms with private showers.
Young people don’t like roughing it any more. They’ve stayed in boutique hotels all over Europe and won’t settle for anything less in the UK. I’m trying to think of the word for it. Oh yes, spoilt.
But, I have to admit, it’s progress. All cruise ships now have private facilities and even the old seaside holiday camps have been replaced by something far more modern and luxurious.
What’s your memory of the YHA?
